In Southern Europe, the horse is still often used when working with cattle. Working Equitation is a challenging sport that arose from that custom. The workers come across many obstacles during their work. They challenged each other and made a game of it, and from there, the working equitation sport was created.
A working equitation competition can be individual or with a team. A competition consists of three or four parts in the following order:
- Dressage test
- Trail (obstacle course on style). The obstacles are comparable to obstacles that you would come across when working with cattle, such as bridges and gates.
- Speed trail (obstacle course based on speed). With the same type of obstacles but then with the element of time/speed.
- Working with cows (only with a team). A specific cow is separated from its group with a team of four equestrians.
- Equestrians at the highest level ride with one hand.
It requires good cooperation between equestrian and horse. The horse must provide aid and be able to execute all of the obstacles in style.
